Medical Transcriptionists
By Marilyn Roberts Medical
transcriptionists are still in great demand by hospitals, clinics,
and any healthcare providers that see patients and have chart notes.Although
speech recognition technology, such as Dragon Naturally Speaking,
has become more popular, it is still a long, slow process for doctors
and other healthcare providers to use efficiently.
Doctors dictate
very fast and they have to train the system to correctly transcribe
that dictation. There are a lot of sound alikes and abbreviations
in medical terminology and this makes it much more difficult than
in other fields that are using this technology. Even those that are
starting to use it still need to have it appropriately edited and
some still use medical transcriptionists to do the editing.
Most healthcare providers want a trained medical
transcriptionist who has taken and passed a course in medical
transcription. It would be extremely hard for someone to transcribe
doctor's dictations without proper training. Some people who may have
been in the medical industry in other capacities might just need a
basic medical terminology course, but generally an MT course is required.
